Use People the Way They Want to Be Used: Build Trust at Work, Part 7

Are you making people feel like they’re on the sidelines?

People want to be used. Leveraged. They want their contributions to make a difference. When they feel they’re standing on the sidelines while the game is being played, people disengage. Are you making people feel like they’re on the sidelines? Like their knowledge and wisdom don’t matter? Unintentionally, you may be.

The foolproof way to make sure you’re using people the way they want to be used is to go after what it is they have to offer. How?

People want to be used. Leveraged. They want their contributions to make a difference.

When they feel they’re standing on the sidelines while the game is being played,

people disengage.

Are you making people feel like they’re on the sidelines? Like their knowledge and wisdom don’t matter? Unintentionally, you may be.

The foolproof way to make sure you’re using people the way they want to be used is to go after what it is they have to offer. How?

Ask them for their input when you’re making decisions.

Involve people.  Seek out their voices. Create channels for them to contribute. Send a clear message that their viewpoints matter.

When people get the message that they’re valued, you get the full value of what they have to offer.

Look, we all have to take responsibility for the health and well being of our teams. The bottom line? People are more likely to align around decisions that are good for the team when they’ve had the opportunity to mold those decisions. To develop ownership of them. When people aren’t given that opportunity?

They feel irrelevant. Over time, they may actually begin to believe they’re irrelevant.

Think about all that’s lost as a result of people feeling irrelevant. The energy. The confidence. The commitment. The trust.

Trust cannot stay alive when people feel they’re of no use.

So, use them. Develop a rhythm of asking for others’ input as you make decisions that affect their work and their team.

You want people’s best?

Go after it.

You want them to feel like they matter?

Engage them.

Trust Tip:

  • Remember that you don’t need to go it alone. You’re surrounded by depth of knowledge and wisdom.
  • Make room for others’ input. Acknowledge what they have to bring.
  • Tap into the best that people have to offer. Simply ask for their points of view!
